Suspected armed herders on Monday ambushed the entourage of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ayilamo in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State, killing two police officers.

Sources in the community told PUNCH Online on Tuesday that the DPO had travelled to Makurdi on official assignment and was returning to Ayilamo when his entourage came under attack.

The incident reportedly occurred around 6:00 p.m., when newly deployed Mobile Police officers to the Ayilamo community were attacked while escorting the DPO back to the area.

The attack comes barely days after suspected armed herders invaded Ayilamo community, killing four police officers and seven residents.

Confirming Monday’s incident, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Peter Aondongu, said two officers in the DPO’s entourage were killed.

According to him, the DPO had gone to Makurdi to pick up some items and was attacked while returning to Ayilamo, resulting in the loss of two of his men.
