At least 11 people have been killed after gunmen opened fire on guests at a house party in KwaMakhutha township near Durban, South Africa.

The incident occurred late on Tuesday when three armed men reportedly stormed a house where 14 people had gathered and opened fire.

Police said 10 victims were killed at the scene, while four others were rushed to hospital. One of the injured victims later died from their injuries, bringing the death toll to 11.

According to the police, 13 men and a woman, who was believed to be pregnant, were attending the party when the gunmen arrived.

The woman was among those killed.

“Information available at this stage suggests that 13 men and one woman, who is believed to be pregnant, were reportedly having a party inside a house when three men arrived and opened fire on them,” police said in a statement.

Police said some of the victims were known to authorities in connection with illegal activities but declined to provide further details, citing the ongoing investigation.

The motive for the shooting has not been established. However, police said they could not rule out a feud between rival groups.

A local television reporter from eNCA at the scene also reported that the gunmen set fire to a vehicle belonging to one of the victims before fleeing.

The shooting comes amid continued concerns over violent crime in South Africa, which has one of the world's highest murder rates.

Police data indicate that more than 60 people are killed in the country each day.

Last year, nine people were killed in a mass shooting at a tavern in Johannesburg.
