A Nigerian lecturer and researcher at the University of Fort Hare, South Africa, Dr Ayodele Temidayo Odularu, has reportedly been found dead at her residence in the Eastern Cape Province.

The deceased’s brother, Dr Gbadebo Odularu, disclosed this to Diaspora Tales on Wednesday following the launch of a GoFundMe campaign to support the family.

A family member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Odularu’s death was not believed to have been from natural causes, adding that the circumstances surrounding her death remained unclear.

Odularu reportedly died on August 16, 2026, while the family has called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

In a statement accompanying the fundraising campaign, the family described the 51-year-old as a cherished daughter, sister, aunt, friend, mentor and scholar whose life was dedicated to helping others.

“With hearts filled with gratitude for a life beautifully lived, we announce the passing of our beloved sister, Dr Ayodele Temidayo Odularu, who departed this world at the age of 51.

“Dr Ayodele was far more than a sister. She was a cherished daughter, aunt, friend, mentor, scholar and a source of encouragement, compassion, wisdom, and strength to everyone blessed to know her.

“Her presence brought warmth into every room. She was known for her kindness, infectious laughter, generosity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to uplifting others. She had a rare ability to make people feel valued, heard, and inspired,” the statement read.

Odularu was an Independent Senior Researcher within the University of Fort Hare community, where she contributed to academic research and dedicated her career to knowledge, discovery and initiatives aimed at improving communities.

The university held a memorial service for her on Thursday, where her legacy and commitment to addressing social and developmental challenges were remembered.

According to the family, her work reflected a strong commitment to issues affecting everyday life, including access to knowledge, educational opportunities, sustainable development and initiatives designed to empower underserved communities.
