As the world globally celebrate the 2026 physiotherapy day, physiotherapists in Ogun State have warned citizens to desist from acts that are capable of negatively affecting their cardiovascular health.
Activities in the state began with an awareness walk from Iyana Mortuary to the Adire and Kampala Market at Itoku areas of Abeokuta to sensitize traders and residents on the role of physical activity in preventing heart-related diseases.
Delivering a lecture on the theme, “Physiotherapy and Physical Activity in the Prevention, Management and Rehabilitation of Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke", after the walk at Itoku market, Abeokuta, Mrs. Eniola Adisa of Redeemer’s Health Village cautioned residents to stay away from unhealthy diets such as excessive salt, fried and junk food, smoking, and physical inactivity disclosing that these are major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.
Mrs. Adisa urged citizens to be alert to early warning symptoms, seek prompt and adequate medical care, engage in regular exercise, and desist from self-medication.
“Prevention is cheaper and safer than treatment. Simple lifestyle like 30 minutes of daily exercise and healthier food choices can significantly reduce your risk of stroke and heart disease,” she emphasized.
The Director of Physiotherapy and Mediacal Rehabilitation, Hospitals Management Board, Mrs. Mojirayo Adeogun encouraged residents to prioritize their health and be mindful of what they consume affirming that "you're what you eat".
Some traders who benefited from the healthcare education and screening exercise, Alhaja Risikat Alaseyori and Mr. Akanji Jeleel, commended the physiotherapists for bringing free blood pressure checks, body mass index assessment, and stroke awareness education directly to their business environment.
