The Ogun State Government has reiterated its commitment to creating an enabling environment for teachers to develop professionally and discharge their responsibilities effectively.
The government made the commitment as the State joined the rest of the world to commemorate the 2026 World Teachers’ Day.
Delivering an address during the event at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, Chairman of the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Evang. Olalekan Ifede, spoke on the theme of the celebration: “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status and Shaping Our Futures’’ said that teachers must be adequately prepared to respond to the changing realities of education, including the use of digital technology, emerging approaches to teaching and learning, inclusive education and the changing needs of learners.
He said the aspiration of the Ogun State Government remained that every child in public primary schools should be able to read, write and communicate effectively, while acquiring other skills, values and character required to become responsible and productive citizens.
The SUBEB chairman urged teachers to uphold the values of professionalism, integrity, discipline, commitment and continuous learning, assuring them of government’s continued support for the teaching profession.
He however, called on teachers to reciprocate government’s efforts through dedication to duty and an unwavering commitment to the success and well-being of every child in their care.
Speaking at the event, the State Chairman of the Association of Secondary School Unions (ASSU), Comrade Felix Agbesanwa, appreciated the State government for creating an avenue for teachers’ voices to be heard, noting that teachers’ salaries were being paid promptly, while running costs were provided to school administrators, while he also commended the government for approving promotions for teachers.
He acknowledged the infrastructural development taking place in schools across the State, just as he highlighted some requests by teachers, including the approval of additional qualifications for teachers, among others.
Also speaking, the State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Sewakanu Noah, said Governor Dapo Abiodun had consistently supported teachers over the years, describing him as a true friend of the teaching profession, commended the Governor for employing teachers through the OgunTEACh platform, noting that the previous administration did not recruit teachers for eight years.
