In a significant political shift ahead of the 2026 Osun governorship election, supporters of former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, operating under the Omoluabi Progressive Group, have severed ties with his political camp and officially rejoined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ejigbo Local Government Area of Osun State.
The defection, which took place over the weekend at Ilupeju Multipurpose Hall, also witnessed the departure of several Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members, signaling a realignment that could reshape the state’s political landscape.
Former Senator Mudashiru Husain, a key APC leader in Ejigbo and 2026 governorship hopeful, welcomed the defectors. He described the mass entry as a validation of inclusive and effective grassroots leadership by the APC.
“The number of people joining us from the PDP and Omoluabi group is proof that our leadership style is resonating with the people,” Husain said.
He emphasized that the APC remains committed to economic growth, social welfare, and development, adding that the new entrants would further bolster the party’s strength ahead of the polls.
While declaring that his gubernatorial ambition is not driven by desperation, Husain stressed his loyalty to the APC’s internal processes and traditions.
“I am qualified in experience, loyalty, and grassroots appeal. If given the mandate, I will lead the APC to reclaim Osun and correct the policy failures of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration,” he added.
Local APC leaders, Ayegbayo Gbolahan (Ejigbo LGA chairman), Olayanju Kolapo (Ejigbo West LCDA), and Lateef Adegoke (Ejigbo APC chairman), also pledged full support for the defectors and reaffirmed their commitment to party unity.
Wole Olajire, speaking for the Omoluabi group, said the decision to rejoin APC was to align with the mainstream progressive agenda and ensure victory in 2026.
Kareem Mubarak, who led the PDP defectors, lambasted the ruling party, accusing it of poor governance and internal disarray.
“The APC’s history of purposeful leadership and people-focused policies makes it the only choice for those who truly want change,” Mubarak asserted.
The development marks a potential turning point in Osun politics as key players regroup and mobilize for the 2026 contest.
