TCN Expands National Grid Capacity with Additional 120MW - The Alternative News

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has successfully expanded the national grid capacity through the energization of two new power transformers at its 330/132/33kV Birnin Kebbi Transmission Substation in Kebbi State.

According to TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah, the transformers, one rated 100 MVA and the other 150 MVA, were brought online on Friday, June 27, 2025, at 1:18 PM and 2:56 PM respectively.

With this upgrade, the substation’s capacity has risen from 300 MVA to 450 MVA, enabling the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) to access an additional 120 megawatts (MW) of bulk power for distribution across Kebbi, Sokoto, and surrounding areas.

The expansion also ensures uninterrupted power supply to Niamey, Niger Republic, in line with Nigeria’s regional electricity cooperation commitments.

In its statement, TCN reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the growth, modernization, and maintenance of Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure, emphasizing efforts to build a robust, efficient, and reliable power transmission network nationwide.
