Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has firmly dispelled rumours suggesting he might defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that his allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not only personal but also a true reflection of the political will of Plateau people.
Speaking during a recent media engagement, the governor addressed speculations fuelled by recent high-profile defections—including those of Governors Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta) and Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), who left the PDP along with elements of their state structures to join the ruling APC.
“I haven’t had that conversation [of leaving PDP for APC] with anyone. The media has speculated a lot, but nothing has happened,” Mutfwang said.
He described the APC’s political presence in Plateau as hollow, accusing the party of electoral fraud and manipulated victories.
“There are two or three groups peddling that rumour. One group is well-intentioned. They know the APC has never really existed on the Plateau—I say that with every sense of responsibility. They’ve been in government by fraud for the past eight years,” he said.
Recalling the 2015 general elections, Mutfwang, who was then a local government chairman, alleged that the APC’s so-called victory was manufactured overnight.
“We adjourned the collation at 8 p.m. to resume the next morning. But by 2 a.m., when I woke up to urinate, I found that the results had already been declared,” he revealed.
He further claimed that the PDP’s 2019 candidate, late General Jeremiah Usaini, was denied a legitimate victory due to systemic manipulation.
“The majority of those who have led APC in Plateau carry a trust deficit. There are genuine APC members who wish we could lend our credibility to them. But Plateau politics doesn’t work like that.”
Mutfwang maintained that the PDP remains deeply rooted in Plateau, asserting that even during APC’s eight-year control of the state, local elections were avoided in certain areas due to fear of losing.
“That’s why I have always said my political future will be decided by God and the people of Plateau State. Wherever Plateau people go, that’s where we go,” he said.
“I am a bona fide member of the PDP. I remain so. And I’m very optimistic that very soon, the PDP crisis will be a thing of the past.”
