Residents of Yogbo, the administrative headquarters of Mbagwen Council Ward in Guma Local Government Area, are living in fear following a wave of coordinated attacks by suspected armed herdsmen over the past five days.
The assaults, which began during the recent visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Benue State, have resulted in the death of at least one person, widespread destruction of farmlands, and a growing humanitarian concern.
Eyewitnesses report that the attackers initially stormed the community firing sporadically, prompting a swift intervention by security forces which temporarily repelled them. However, the following day, the assailants returned — this time openly grazing cattle on farmlands, destroying vital crops while villagers remained indoors out of fear.
On the third day, residents say the attackers blocked the Yogbo–Gyungu Adze road, where they killed a traveler, escalating panic across surrounding communities.
The most recent incident occurred on Sunday, June 23, when a group of Tiv farmers who had gone fishing at River Shina were ambushed. Although full casualty details are still emerging, community leaders believe the pattern of attacks points to a systematic attempt to overrun Yogbo and displace its residents.
Speaking on behalf of the affected residents, local activist Tivta Samuel Aondohemba made an urgent plea to the Chairman of Guma LGA, Hon. Orwough Maurice, and Governor Hyacinth Alia, calling for immediate government intervention.
“The people of Yogbo are under siege,” Aondohemba said. “We need help now more than ever. Please help share this message to save lives.”
Despite the growing tension and loss, no official statement has yet been issued by the Benue State Government or security agencies.
Residents are calling for increased security presence and protection of farmlands to prevent further displacement, loss of life, and destruction of livelihoods.
