In line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive during his recent visit to Benue State, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has commenced high-level consultations with key stakeholders to address the growing insecurity in the state.

On Saturday, Senator Akume met with the paramount traditional rulers of Benue, the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty, Orchivirigh Prof. James Ayatse, and the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty, Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John, as part of a broad strategy to restore peace and stability in the region.

The meetings are a response to the Yelewata attack and are part of a wider presidential directive to establish a strategic peace committee led by the SGF. This committee is tasked with tackling the root causes of the violence and setting a path toward sustainable reconciliation.

 “The recent incident is heartbreaking,” Akume said. “The President is committed to ending the senseless killings in Benue and across the country. We appeal to you to remain vigilant and promptly report any signs of trouble. The President will not disappoint you.”

Senator Akume, himself a native of Benue State, emphasized the importance of involving traditional leaders in the peace process, noting their vital roles in conflict resolution, grassroots mobilization, and community dialogue.

Both monarchs commended President Tinubu’s personal visit to the state, describing it as a mark of genuine concern. They pledged their full support for the peace process and vowed to continue mobilizing their communities toward unity and nonviolence.
