President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Nigeria’s security chiefs and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to launch an aggressive manhunt for those responsible for the latest wave of killings in Benue State.

The President issued the order on Wednesday during a visit to Makurdi, the Benue State capital, in response to renewed deadly attacks in the North-Central state.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting at the Benue Government House, Tinubu expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of arrests so far.

 “Police, I hope your men are on alert to listen to information. How come no arrest has been made? I expect there should be an arrest of those criminals,” he said.

Turning to the nation’s top military and intelligence officials, the President urged a stronger and more sustained effort to dismantle the criminal networks behind the violence.

 “Christopher (Chief of Defence Staff), you have given much. I watch your comments, you can’t be tired of staying in the bush. Oloyede and the Air Marshal, we thank all of you, but we need to keep our ears to the ground. Let’s get those criminals, let’s get them out.”

President Tinubu also charged the Director-Generals of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the State Security Service (SSS) to enhance their intelligence-gathering capabilities.

“DG NIA, DG SSS, retool your information channels and let’s have tangible intelligence so that this will not occur again,” he added.

The President’s visit and stern directive come amid growing national concern over security in Benue and other parts of the country affected by violent attacks.
