The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has revealed ongoing efforts to woo former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, back into its fold ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Thursday, the PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, described Obi as a “political capital” whose presence would be a major advantage for any political party.
“Peter Obi is our product, and the PDP indeed wants to get him back. He is a very great capital for any political party, and any political party that will have him will be to their advantage,” Abdullahi stated.
Obi, who served as the PDP’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2019 elections, left the party in 2022 to contest the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party (LP), where he emerged as a top contender. Despite electoral irregularities alleged by his supporters, Obi garnered over six million votes and won in twelve states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), ultimately finishing third behind the APC’s Bola Tinubu and the PDP’s Atiku Abubakar.
Abdullahi praised Obi’s 2023 outing, saying, “The truth of the matter is if he had not gone the way he did in the last dispensation and proved that mettle to generate over six million in spite of the rigging and frustration of his chances in many of the states, Peter Obi is truly a political capital, no doubt about it.”
Obi remains a member of the Labour Party but has recently expressed openness to alliances, including a coalition with other opposition movements under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
This development comes as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, PDP’s flag bearer in the last two elections, formally announced his resignation from the party, a move expected to reshape the 2027 presidential race and the opposition’s power structure.
