Buhari Was a Great Listener, But Ill Health Affected His Leadership – Amaechi - The Alternative News

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has described the late President Muhammadu Buhari as a deeply attentive leader whose failing health impacted his presidency.

In an interview with LEADERSHIP Weekend, Amaechi, a close associate of the late president, emphasized Buhari’s deliberative style during cabinet meetings, particularly at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) sessions.

“The late president was a great listener. At our meetings, which took longer hours, President Buhari would listen to every minister as he called them to make their presentations,” Amaechi stated.

According to him, Buhari rarely interrupted his ministers, choosing instead to make notes, nod in acknowledgment, and call ministers by their official portfolios. Even in his case, despite their personal closeness, Buhari maintained formal decorum.

“He would use my ministry to call me whenever it was my turn to make contributions,” Amaechi recalled.

While praising Buhari’s love and passion for Nigeria, the former minister admitted that the president’s health challenges hindered aspects of his governance.

“The president (may his soul rest in peace) loved the country and was passionate about the country, but I think his sickness affected him,” he added.

Amaechi’s comments add to a growing chorus of reflections from former aides and associates who have offered new insights into the late president’s leadership style, decision-making process, and personal challenges
