Freedom of Movement: Gov Okpebholo Given 7-Day Ultimatum Over Threat to Peter Obi - The Alternative News

A legal firestorm is brewing in Edo State after Governor Monday Okpebholo warned that Peter Obi "must not come to Edo without security clearance," adding that the former presidential candidate’s safety could not be guaranteed otherwise.

In response, Festus Ogun Legal (FOLEGAL) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the governor, demanding a retraction and public apology to Mr. Obi and all Nigerians, describing the governor’s remarks as unconstitutional and unlawful.

In a letter dated July 21, 2025, the law firm insisted that the threat violates Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees every citizen the right to move freely throughout Nigeria. Citing the Faith Okafor v. Lagos State Government case (2016), the firm emphasized that no governor has the power to restrict a citizen’s movement without legal grounds.

“Threatening Mr. Peter Obi not to visit Edo State without security clearance is certainly not supported by law,” the letter read.

FOLEGAL labeled the governor’s position as preposterous and a gross violation of fundamental rights, asserting that no Nigerian should be subjected to clearance before moving freely within the country.

The firm warned that if the demand is not met within seven days, it may pursue legal action to enforce Mr. Obi’s fundamental rights, "in the interest of our constitutional democracy and the rule of law."
