A peaceful protest by retired police officers in Abuja has drawn national attention as they demand improved pension and welfare benefits after years of service, Sahara reporters gathered.
The protesters, who have remained orderly, refused refreshments from the police and insisted on a direct audience with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.
In response, the police released a statement assuring the retirees that the IGP is prepared to meet them at the Peacekeeping Hall of Force Headquarters.
However, IGP Egbetokun also raised alarms over an alleged plot by unnamed individuals to hijack the protest and incite disorder.
While the police urged calm and constructive dialogue, the retirees voiced deep frustrations. Some, like ASP Shuaibu and SP Agadasu, recounted receiving just ₦1.6–₦1.7 million after over three decades of service, sums they described as insultingly inadequate.
Many lamented the dire conditions facing retired officers, including illness, poverty, and abandonment by the system.
Despite assurances from the police leadership, the IGP had yet to appear before the protesters as of the time of this report.
