The Supreme Court will on Thursday, July 10, deliver its final verdict in the legal tussle between Governor Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the 2024 Edo State Governorship Election.
A five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Mohammed Garba Lawal, is expected to pronounce judgment, putting an end to the protracted legal challenge against Okpebholo’s election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Okpebholo winner of the September 21, 2024, poll, but Ighodalo and the PDP rejected the outcome, citing alleged electoral irregularities, including over-voting.
Both the Election Petition Tribunal and the Court of Appeal dismissed Ighodalo’s petition, upholding INEC’s declaration. Dissatisfied, he proceeded to the Supreme Court, seeking to overturn the lower courts’ decisions.
With the apex court’s ruling imminent, both camps await a conclusive resolution to the electoral dispute.
