The body of late former President Muhammadu Buhari departed London early Tuesday morning aboard a Presidential Jet en route to Daura, Katsina State, for burial with full state honours.
Vice President Kashim Shettima is leading a federal delegation accompanying the remains, following final diplomatic and logistical arrangements. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to personally receive the body at the Katsina International Airport, where a brief military ceremony will be held before the funeral procession moves to Daura.
According to Information Minister Mohammed Idris, Islamic funeral prayers (Jana’iza) and interment will take place at Buhari’s private residence in Daura.
Buhari passed away on Sunday in a London hospital, prompting a flood of global tributes. In response, President Tinubu declared a national mourning period, ordered condolence registers in all federal institutions and embassies, and constituted an Inter-Ministerial Committee chaired by SGF Senator George Akume to oversee the burial.
Twenty-five Federal Executive Council members have been directed to attend the burial and remain in Daura for the third-day prayer on Wednesday.
President Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State (1983–1985) and civilian President (2015–2023), leaving behind a legacy that has drawn global attention in his passing.
