The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that four people have died and seven others sustained injuries following the collapse of a three-storey uncompleted building in the Abedi Sabon Gari area of Fagge Local Government, Kano State.
NEMA’s Kano Territorial Coordinator, Nuraddeen Abdullahi, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, stating that the tragic incident occurred around 6:42 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, after a prolonged and heavy downpour.
According to Abdullahi, the agency received a distress alert at approximately 6:49 p.m. and immediately mobilised a Search and Rescue (SAR) team in collaboration with other emergency responders.
“Eyewitness accounts indicated that several occupants were in the building at the time of the collapse, with many believed to be trapped under the rubble,” he said.
Initial reports as of 1:56 a.m. on Monday confirmed two fatalities and six injured victims, all of whom were evacuated from the site. By 5:41 a.m., two more deaths and an additional injury were confirmed, bringing the total to four dead and seven injured. All victims were taken to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, for medical attention.
Abdullahi noted that the rescue team secured the perimeter of the site to control crowds and ensure the safety of responders. Heavy equipment and lighting systems, including Amida lights, were deployed to aid rescue efforts.
“Several individuals are still suspected to be trapped, and efforts are ongoing to reach them safely,” he added.
He said that the operation remains in progress in collaboration with local authorities and other stakeholders. A detailed post-incident assessment report will be compiled upon completion of the rescue efforts.
While there is no immediate need for external reinforcement, Abdullahi stressed that the situation remains fluid and further updates will be provided as necessary.
