The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly opposed moves by the National Assembly to transfer labour issues, including the minimum wage, from the Federal Government’s exclusive legislative list to the concurrent list, a change that would allow individual states to set their own wage standards.
Speaking on Friday during the National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting of the Central Working Committee in Abeokuta, Ogun State, NLC President Joe Ajaero warned that the union would resist such attempts with every available tool.
Ajaero described the proposal as an exercise in futility, stressing that globally, the issue of minimum wage is treated as a national matter, in line with International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions. He emphasized that member nations, not sub-national entities like states, are recognized in global labour standards.
The NLC president reiterated that the national minimum wage remains a symbol of social justice, and any effort to undermine it would face stiff resistance from organised labour.
