The Nigerian Senate has recommended the payment of N200 million as compensation to the family of Ivan Onose Omhonrina, the 2-year-old boy who was tragically killed by a stray bullet during a National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) operation in Okpanam, Delta State, on July 13, 2023.
The resolution followed a petition presented by Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, who persistently pursued justice for the family. The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, chaired by Senator Neda Imasuen, conducted a thorough investigation before presenting its findings.
During the Senate’s plenary session on Thursday, lawmakers observed a minute of silence in honour of the deceased before adopting the committee's recommendation that the NDLEA compensate the family for their loss and trauma.
Ivan was killed, and his younger brother, Eromonsele, was injured when bullets allegedly fired by NDLEA operatives during a drug raid pierced their mother’s shop. Both children were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, but Ivan did not survive.
The family, devastated by the incident, had been seeking justice until Senator Nwoko formally took up the case at the National Assembly.
