President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Tanko Al-Makura, former governor of Nasarawa State, as the new Chairman of the Governing Board of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

The appointment was formally announced by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the launch of an ICT Development Project supported by the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) across 10 selected Nigerian universities.

Al-Makura, a seasoned businessman and politician, is widely recognized for spearheading various development initiatives during his tenure as Nasarawa State governor. His new role at UBEC places him at the helm of a critical agency charged with driving basic education policy and infrastructure across Nigeria.

UBEC, an agency under the Federal Ministry of Education, oversees the release of counterpart funding and implements key programs aimed at improving access to quality basic education nationwide.

President Tinubu’s choice of Al-Makura is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the commission’s leadership with a figure who combines governance experience and development-oriented vision.
