The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has confirmed that 207 persons have died and over 500 sustained injuries following a devastating flood in two communities in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.
The Director General of NSEMA, Abdullahi Baba Arah, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Minna on the agency’s response to various disasters across the state.
Arah noted that the flood left hundreds homeless, and each displaced family received ₦500,000 to help secure new accommodation. Relief materials and food items were also distributed to ease their hardship.
He added that the exact number of missing persons is still being verified, and rescue and recovery efforts are ongoing.
As part of proactive measures, Arah said the agency had launched flood sensitisation and early warning campaigns across the eight emirate councils of the state. He urged residents in flood-prone areas, especially along waterways, to relocate to safer zones.
“These efforts are geared toward increasing public awareness, encouraging preparedness, and reducing flood risks through community engagement and educational outreach,” he said.
Beyond flood response, NSEMA has also been involved in managing fire and explosion disasters, including the Sabon Pegi dynamite incident, the Diko and Agaie tanker explosions, and several residential and market fires.
Arah thanked Governor Mohammed Umar Bago for his support, as well as traditional leaders, community members, volunteers, and humanitarian partners for their continued collaboration.
He reaffirmed NSEMA’s commitment to swift disaster response, risk reduction, and building resilient communities across the state.
