In a fresh wave of political realignments, two senators from Akwa Ibom State have officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers are Senator Sampson Ekong, representing Akwa Ibom South, and Senator Aniekan Bassey, representing Akwa Ibom North-East.
Their defection letters were read on the floor of the Senate by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Wednesday’s plenary session.
The senators cited prolonged leadership crises within the PDP as the primary reason for abandoning the party.
“The internal disunity and unresolved leadership issues within the PDP have made it impossible for me to continue under its platform,” one of the letters reportedly stated.
This development adds to the ongoing wave of defections from the opposition PDP, with several political figures shifting allegiance either to the ruling APC or to smaller parties like the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Political observers view the latest defections as a major boost for the APC in Akwa Ibom State, traditionally a PDP stronghold, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections.
