Why I Quit Banking for Music – Rapper CDQ Opens Up - The Alternative News

Popular Nigerian rapper CDQ has opened up about why he abandoned a promising banking career to pursue his passion for music.

In a recent interview with The Echo Room, the ‘Nowo Soke’ crooner revealed that he only ventured into banking to honour the wishes of his late father but found no personal fulfillment in the job.

“I quit my bank job. I couldn’t tell my mother or any family member then,” CDQ said. “I left the house and went to stay with Masterkraft in the studio.”

He recounted how his friend and music producer, Masterkraft, who was not only producing music but also lending him suits to wear to work, was shocked when he announced his decision to quit banking for music.

CDQ explained that he would often find himself writing lyrics during office hours instead of focusing on his banking responsibilities, a clear sign that music was his true calling.

“Banking isn’t my passion. I could probably do it just to make ends meet. But music, whether it gives me a return or not, I’m still happy doing it,” he said.

The gamble eventually paid off. CDQ recalled telling Masterkraft that they would see a breakthrough within six months, a prophecy that came true when they landed a record deal and moved from the ghetto to Lekki, an upscale area in Lagos.

CDQ shot to national fame in 2016 with the release of his hit song ‘Indomie’ featuring Masterkraft and Olamide. A remix featuring Davido further boosted his rise in the music industry.
