An Abuja-Kaduna passenger train derailed on Tuesday near Jere Station, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded.
In a video circulating online, eyewitnesses were heard saying, “the train is full and they are coming out,” as passengers disembarked from the affected coaches.
The incident comes just days after the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed a technical fault on the same service. On August 20, one of the coaches reportedly developed a “hot axle” several kilometres from Rigasa Station in Kaduna, caused by abnormal temperatures on the journal housing due to wheel friction.
NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, had at the time assured passengers that the situation was brought under control and the train safely marshalled to Kaduna.
Tuesday’s derailment has, however, reignited safety concerns among regular users of the Abuja-Kaduna rail service, a critical transport link between the Federal Capital Territory and the North-West.
