The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has defended the Federal Government’s decision to appoint Fuji star Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol.
The appointment comes after recent incidents of unruly behaviour at Nigerian airports involving KWAM 1 and Ibom Air passenger Comfort Emmanson. KWAM 1 had been accused of obstructing a ValueJet aircraft’s movement on August 5, while Emmanson was involved in a confrontation with an air hostess.
Keyamo explained that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority had reduced KWAM 1’s flight ban to one month and agreed to work with him to raise public awareness on acceptable conduct in aviation. The decision, he said, followed appeals from respected individuals and the musician’s public apology.
Responding to criticism of double standards, the minister clarified on X that the role was unpaid and akin to community service, noting that such appointments of repentant offenders are common worldwide.
“It is not a big position with perquisites. Examples abound in Nigeria where similar roles have been given to repentant persons by previous governments," Keyamo wrote.
He added that the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) is also considering appointing Emmanson as an ambassador for good passenger conduct, following her release from prison custody.
Keyamo maintained that his ministry had been fair to all parties involved in both cases.
