The Federal Government has cut the six-month flight ban on Fuji music star, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1), to one month and appointed him an ambassador for proper airport security protocol.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the decision on Wednesday, saying it followed appeals from well-meaning Nigerians and KWAM 1’s public apology over the August 5 incident at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
According to Keyamo, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will work with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to engage the musician in promoting awareness on acceptable conduct at airports. The NCAA will also withdraw its criminal complaint against him.
“The NCAA is to reduce his flight ban to one month. FAAN will work with him as an ambassador for proper airport security protocol going forward," Keyamo stated.
He added that the clemency was granted on compassionate grounds.
On August 5, KWAM 1 was accused of breaching aviation safety rules by carrying a prohibited flask, alleged to contain alcohol, onto a ValueJet flight to Lagos, spilling its contents on personnel, and later obstructing the aircraft’s movement on the tarmac.
He has since apologised, insisting the flask contained only water for medical reasons.
