The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday insisted it operates a non-partisan mandate and will not be swayed by political pressure or blackmail in the fight against corruption.
Responding to allegations by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that its recent summons to opposition figures were politically motivated, the EFCC described the attack as “unprovoked, shocking and an unwarranted blame game.”
In a statement issued in Abuja by its Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, the commission stressed that there are “no sacred cows” in its investigations and prosecutions, whether suspects are in the ruling party or opposition.
“The ADC’s claims are self-serving, diversionary, narrow and idle,” the EFCC said. “Every corruption allegation deserves to be investigated, and there is no constraint of time or season in criminal investigations.”
The agency noted that several political figures across party lines, including members of the ruling party and serving governors, are on its investigative radar. It added that it would not disclose ongoing investigations “no matter the provocation.”
“The immunity against any investigation by the EFCC is accountability and probity. Fraud is fraud. Corruption is corruption. There is no sacred cow, protected interest or partisan consideration in the investigation and prosecution of corruption,” the statement added.
The EFCC urged political parties to focus on their activities and allow it to carry out its statutory duties, warning that political statements designed to “heat up the polity” will not derail its anti-graft mandate.
