Towards the successful conclusion of a 5-day workshop on the Critique and Validation of 6 National Occupational Standards and the Final Critique for 5 National Technical Certificates (NTC), the Ogun State Government has drawn an advanced Curriculum Review for Technical and Vocational Education.
Project Coordinator, Ogun State Economic Transformation Project (OGSTEP) Mrs. Mosunmola Owo-Odusi, disclosed this during the closing ceremony in Abeokuta, saying that the review brought together Education Leaders, Industry Stakeholders and Curriculum Experts with a view to endorse updated Technical Curricula designed to meet Modern Industry demands and boost youth employability.
Mrs. Owo-Odusi, noted that the workshop was jointly organised by the Ogun State Technical and Vocational Education Board (OGSTVEB), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and OGSTEP, a World Bank sponsored initiative committed to enhancing human capital development.
Speaking, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Alhaja Mariam Oloko, represented by Director of Curriculum Development and Evaluation, Mr. Tope Lasilo, commended the facilitators and participants for their active engagement throughout the workshop.
In his remarks, NBTE Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris Garji, represented by Director of Curriculum Dr. Musa Koko, commended the resource teams for their dedication to curriculum research and development, noting that the updated curricula were tailored to Industry needs, with the potential to generate employment and positively impact Ogun State’s economy.
Also speaking, Acting Executive Secretary of OGSTVEB, Mrs. Mojisola Adenowo, expressed gratitude to the present administration for prioritising Technical and Vocational Education, pointed out that the successful review of the new trades would enhance development in the State and across Nigeria, while appreciating all participants for their contributions to the workshop.
While highlighting his views, TVET Specialist Consultant, OGSTEP, Mr. Unyime Eyo, pointed out that in the past 5 years, OGSTEP, in collaboration with the World Bank and OGSTVEB, has focused on institutional development, which includes; partnerships with over 500 industries, physical rehabilitation of all 8 Technical Colleges in the State, provision of ICT and modern laboratories, training for over 17,000 artisans as well as digital capacity-building for teachers.
In their separate presentations, Chairmen of the 5 newly reviewed trades; (Crop Production Craft), Mr. Kazim Bello, (Fashion and Textile Machine Maintenance/Repair Craft), Dr. Comfort Mado-Alabi (Embellishment Craft), Dr. Hindatu Idris-Umar, (Mechatronics Craft), Prof. Fakorede Saheed and (Ornamental Building Craft), Dr. Akinwumi Alonge, stated that the revised curricula would be 70 percent practical and 30 percent theory, emphasisng that the shift would ensure students gain hands-on skills directly applicable to modern industry and entrepreneurship.
