President Bola Tinubu has approved new appointments to the governing councils and management of several federal universities.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President named Chisom Obih as a member of the Governing Council of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State. Obih replaces a council member who recently passed away.
Tinubu also appointed Prof. Ralph Akinfeleye, a renowned communications scholar, to the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. Akinfeleye, a former Head of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos and Chairman of the Centre of Excellence in Multimedia and Cinematography/Unilag Radio 103.1 FM and Television, replaces Mr. Wahab Owokoniran, now Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Federal University of Transport, Daura, Katsina State.
In addition, the President appointed Prof. Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai as Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology, Tsafe, Zamfara State. Other principal officers named include Mr. Hamisu Yusuf Yelwa as Registrar, Usman Nakazalle Sanusi as Bursar, and Dr. Shehu Aminu Liman as Librarian.
Prof. Yakasai, a retired Nigerian Army Colonel, is currently Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Bayero University, Kano, and chairs the Committee of Provosts of Colleges of Medicine in Nigeria. He has served as Director-General of the Kano State Hospitals Management Board and is a member of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, Benue State.
He holds an MBBS from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and earned multiple international qualifications, including membership and fellowship at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (UK), a Master’s in Medical Education from the University of Winchester, and fellowships from the International College of Surgeons (USA) and the American College of Surgeons.
