Fresh political tension has erupted in Edo State as councillors across the 18 local government areas have commenced moves to impeach acting chairmen, POLITICS NIGERIA reports.

The development began on Monday, barely 24 hours after 59 councillors received their Certificates of Return from the state electoral body.

Party sources within the All Progressives Congress (APC) disclosed that the action is aimed at ensuring that control of the councils rests firmly in the hands of party loyalists rather than defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In Uhunmwonde Local Government, eight councillors voted to remove Hon. Iradia Benjamin as chairman, while in Esan West, Hon. Aigboboh stepped down before impeachment proceedings could be initiated against him.

The wave of impeachments, observers say, is expected to spread to other councils in the coming days as the new councillors consolidate their positions.
