JUST IN: Resident Doctors Issue 10-Day Ultimatum Over Unpaid Allowances, Threaten Nationwide Strike - The Alternative News

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has issued a fresh 10-day ultimatum to government agencies, warning of a nationwide strike if its demands are not met.

In a communiqué signed by its President, Dr. Tope Osundara; General Secretary, Dr. Oluwasola Odunbaku; and Publicity/Social Secretary, Dr. Omoha Amobi, after an Extraordinary National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting held virtually on Sunday, the association expressed displeasure at the government’s failure to honour earlier commitments.

NARD noted that many of its members are yet to receive the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), the outstanding five months’ arrears from the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) review, as well as the 2024 Accoutrement Allowance.

The doctors also condemned the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) for downgrading the membership certificates of the West African Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons, and criticized the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) for delays in issuing certificates to deserving candidates.

The communiqué further decried the Kaduna State Government’s failure to implement agreements with doctors at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital, and Oyo State Government’s inaction on welfare issues at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomosho, where an indefinite strike is ongoing.

However, the association commended state governments that have paid the 2025 MRTF.

NARD is demanding immediate payment of all outstanding arrears, restoration of recognition for postgraduate certificates, implementation of the 2024 CONMESS, and urgent intervention by Kaduna and Oyo State governments to resolve pending welfare concerns.

The doctors warned that if these demands are not met by Wednesday, September 10, 2025, they will proceed on an indefinite nationwide strike.
