The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has hinted that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national convention scheduled for November in Ibadan, Oyo State, may not hold if the party fails to resolve its internal crisis.
Speaking during his monthly media chat on Monday, Wike clarified that the issue was not about the venue but the unresolved problems within the party ahead of the convention.
“The issue of the national convention is not the problem; the problem is the issues leading to the convention, and people should understand that,” he said.
He disclosed that the PDP has agreed to set up a committee to address concerns in the Southeast, particularly in Ebonyi State, noting that his team was scheduled to meet later in the evening to deliberate further.
Wike dismissed speculations that his position was linked to a rift with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, insisting that the location of the convention was not in contention.
“The venue is not the subject matter. The subject matter is: have you done what you are supposed to do before holding that convention? If you have not done it, it may be a setback,” the minister said.
The former Rivers State governor stressed that the PDP had in the past held conventions in different cities, including Port Harcourt and Abuja, and could choose any location. However, he warned that unless the underlying grievances are addressed to the satisfaction of aggrieved members, the convention could be jeopardized.
According to him, the party leadership has already begun taking steps to resolve the issues, but the outcome would determine whether the convention proceeds as planned.
