The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has temporarily reopened the upgraded Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan, ahead of the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja.

The move is aimed at easing flight operations for dignitaries and visitors expected in the city for Friday’s ceremony. A test landing was successfully carried out on Wednesday when an aircraft from the presidential fleet touched down at exactly 9:14 a.m., drawing cheers from onlookers.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected in Ibadan for the historic coronation. Authorities say the smooth test operation underscores the airport’s readiness to safely handle high-profile flights.

This marks the first flight into the facility since March 2025, setting the stage for regular operations.

Governor Seyi Makinde had flagged off the airport’s upgrade in September 2024, noting that the project would open Oyo State to global markets and strengthen its transportation network.

So far, the state government has upgraded the VIP lounge, installed a 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility, and procured a modern fire truck to improve safety standards.
