The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old Tsangaya Islamic teacher, Lawal Nasiru, of Unguwar Jarmai in Darazo Local Government Area, over alleged child assault and cruelty.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Mohammed Ahmed Wakil, the suspect was apprehended after reports that he tied up an 11-year-old Almajiri pupil, Sani Abdullahi, with a thick rope and inflicted injuries on him using a heavy stick and cable.

Wakil disclosed that on September 22, 2025, at about 4:00 p.m., one Idris Mohammed, 50, of Gidan Waya, Darazo, attached to the Social Welfare Department, brought the victim to the Divisional Police Headquarters, Darazo, to lodge a complaint. He alleged that the incident occurred the previous day at about 1:00 p.m.

Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer, SP Auwalu Ilu, led a team to the scene, arrested the suspect, and took the injured boy to the General Hospital, Darazo, for medical treatment.

During interrogation, Nasiru confessed to tying up the boy, claiming he did so to prevent him from running away from the school. However, the victim narrated that he was mercilessly confined for a prolonged period by the suspect.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation. The police confirmed that upon conclusion, the suspect will be profiled and charged to court.
