The Ogun State Government, has recommended strongly that all Local Government authorities in the state must follow all guiding principles of the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), to accommodate more capital investment and engage in Public Private Partnerships, for continuous local economic development and growth with technical assistance from the State.
Commissioner for Finance and Chief Economic Adviser, Dapo Okubadejo, represented by his counterpart in the Budget and Planning Ministry, Olaolu Olabimtan, conveyed this while declaring open, the fifth consultative meeting in Abeokuta, aimed to shape out the 2026-2028 MTEF, in accordance with the provisions of the State’s fiscal Responsibility Law 2000, as amended.
Okubadejo said that the statutory requirements within the MTEF context made fiscal sustainability of the State, a focused priority to maintain high and consistent Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), ensuring the availability of additional resources to address the state’s collective developmental priorities with consciousness to financial prudence.
He encouraged the Local Government Areas Chairmen, Secretaries, Heads of Administration, Accounting Officers, Treasurers, Directors who were present, to follow the guiding principles and structure their IGR to accommodate more capital investments and be proactive in pursuit of more PPP for local development towards the state’s common growth.
The Commissioner said the consultation came as a window for all Local Government authorities to declare their needs and wants in terms of socio-economic and development priorities in order to provide quality service and impactful projects to the people.
In his presentation, the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Olaolu Obabimtan expatiated the initiative as one, which indicated that Macro Economic Indicators (MEI), should be the basis of the MTEF, within the framework of the medium term plan, saying, heavy emphasis must be laid on Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) for proper measurement of achievements on various projects.
Olabimtan pointed out that as the state’s focus remained centered on fiscal sustainability, Economic Fiscal Update (EFU) has to be considered greatly, to enable the LGAs plan adequately to improve revenues and taxes, as the State would be ready to give necessary technical assistance for better results.
On her part, the Chairman, Association of Local Governments of Nigerian (ALGON), Ogun State Chapter, Afolasade Adeyemo, said ALGON would collaborate and work collectively with the State and Local Governments for the economy to prosper, noting that the Local Governments being the closest tier to the people, could not afford to fail in their responsibilities and expected roles in development and growth of the State.
She promised that ALGON would continue to maintain the openness and transparency of the State in line with the law to deliver growth and dividends to the people.
In their remarks, Chairmen of Ado/Odo-Ota and Ipokia Local Governments, Honourables, Lawal Wasiu and Johnson Aroseh, respectively, submitted their readiness for synergies with the State, in order to make positive impact on their local communities.
