A fresh twist emerged in Ondo State politics on Wednesday as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the November 2024 election, Chief Ajayi Agboola, announced the withdrawal of his appeal pending before the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Agboola, a former Deputy Governor of the state, had challenged the declaration of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the duly elected winner of the poll.
In a personally signed letter addressed to the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Agboola explained that the decision to discontinue the legal battle followed wide consultations with his family, political associates, and legal team.
He noted that continuing the case would not serve the broader interest of peace and good governance in the state.
“As the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, I have engaged in thoughtful discussions with my family, party members, associates, and legal advisors. After careful deliberation, we have reached a consensus that the appeal should be withdrawn, and I hereby do so,” the letter partly read.
Agboola stressed that his political career had always been driven by a commitment to peace, unity, and the promotion of democratic ideals.
“Having served as the former Deputy Governor and as a representative of my constituents at the national level, my foremost commitment is to the principles of good governance and the promotion of peaceful coexistence in Ondo State and across Nigeria. In this spirit, I extend my heartfelt wishes to His Excellency Lucky Aiyedatiwa as he leads our state,” he added.
His withdrawal not only brings months of legal tussle to an end but also reshapes the dynamics of opposition politics in the Sunshine State.
