The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched an investigation into Prof. Saleh Abdullahi Usman, Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), over alleged large-scale financial misconduct linked to the 2025 Hajj operations.

According to reliable sources, Prof. Usman appeared at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja earlier today following a formal invitation by the anti-graft agency. He was, however, released on administrative bail and is required to report daily to the Commission as the investigation progresses.

The probe comes amid mounting allegations of corruption within the Commission, including the alleged diversion and misappropriation of over ₦50 billion in Hajj funds.

Among the specific allegations are the unauthorised expenditure of ₦25 billion on Masha’ir tents, ₦7.9 billion on contingency housing, and ₦1.6 billion in travel expenses purportedly for the spouses of senior officials.

The EFCC had, last month, detained NAHCON’s Commissioner for Policy, Personnel and Finance, Aliu Abdulrazak, as well as its Director of Finance and Accounts, Aminu Y. Muhammed, in connection with the scandal. Both officials are reportedly cooperating with investigators.

Although Prof. Usman has not been formally charged, sources within the Presidency confirmed that his Villa security clearance has been revoked pending the outcome of the investigation, a move seen as underscoring the seriousness with which the government views the allegations.

During an earlier appearance before the House of Representatives at a public hearing, the NAHCON Chairman acknowledged the existence of “dirty deals” within the Commission but pledged to support efforts to enhance transparency and accountability.

In a statement, NAHCON said the Commission “will not shield any staff or process found wanting,” affirming its commitment to cooperate fully with relevant authorities.
