The Obidient Movement has dismissed reports suggesting that the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is in alliance talks with former President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The National Coordinator of the movement, Yunusa Tanko, made the clarification in a statement, saying there is no political agreement or pact between the two leaders aimed at unseating President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Tanko’s reaction follows growing speculation that Jonathan may be considering a return to active politics, with reports linking him to a possible comeback under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or a new political alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Jonathan was recently reported to have held a meeting in Abuja with ADC National Chairman David Mark, party spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi, and other top figures of the party.

Similarly, Obi’s political trajectory ahead of 2027 remains a subject of speculation. While he remains a full member of the Labour Party, he is also part of an opposition coalition that has adopted the ADC as one of its platforms.

The speculations gained traction following a closed-door meeting between Obi and Jonathan, which some political observers interpreted as the beginning of an alliance.

However, Tanko dismissed such claims, insisting that the meeting was purely a cordial interaction between two leaders who share mutual respect and a common concern for Nigeria’s future.

“My principal and the former president have a very good working relationship, and they know each other very well. So seeing them talk to each other does not mean anything beyond that,” Tanko said.

“It should not be translated to mean anything other than a platonic discussion on how to move this country forward. There was no talk about 2027. Even when they met in Ghana, I was there, there was nothing like that.”

Tanko urged Nigerians to disregard the rumours and focus on issues of governance and national development rather than political speculations.
