A tragic incident has thrown Wawa Cantonment in Niger State into mourning after a soldier allegedly killed his wife before taking his own life.

The Nigerian Army confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday by its Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Stephen Nwachukwu. He identified the soldier as Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, serving with the 221 Battalion, Wawa Cantonment.

According to the statement, the disturbing event occurred on Saturday, October 11, 2025, within the cantonment.

 “The tragic incident, which occurred at Wawa Cantonment, Niger State, has created tension and deep shock among residents of the barracks as they try to understand the circumstances that led to such an unfortunate act,” the statement read in part.

Nwachukwu said the lifeless bodies of Lance Corporal Femi and his wife were found in their apartment at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the soldier had been on duty before he reportedly sought permission from his superior to attend to personal matters, shortly before the incident occurred.

“The Nigerian Army deeply regrets this unfortunate development and commiserates with the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased over this painful loss. The NA also prays for the peaceful repose of their souls,” Nwachukwu added.

He noted that the remains of the couple have been preserved, while an in-depth investigation has commenced to ascertain the motive and full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, assured the public that findings from the investigation would be made public and that measures would be put in place to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
