A major social media uproar has erupted across Nigeria as citizens intensify calls for the removal of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, following the resignation of Uche Nnaji, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology.

The campaign, trending under the hashtag #WikeMustGo, gained massive traction online shortly after Nnaji stepped down from office amid allegations of certificate forgery.

Many Nigerians argue that Wike should also resign or be sacked in the spirit of accountability and public integrity, citing long-standing corruption and land-related allegations against him.

Online reports claim that the former Rivers State governor and his wife, Eberechi Suzzette Wike, acquired three luxury lakeside homes in Winter Springs, Florida, valued at over $6 million, between 2021 and 2023. The properties were allegedly purchased in cash and later transferred to their children, sparking widespread outrage and accusations of money laundering.

In addition, Wike has been accused of allocating more than 2,000 hectares of prime Abuja land, estimated at $3.6 billion, to a company purportedly linked to his son, Joaquin Wike.

However, the minister has strongly denied all allegations, describing them as “baseless, politically motivated, and orchestrated to smear his reputation.” His media team also dismissed the reports as “deliberate fabrications by political enemies.”

The renewed calls for Wike’s removal came after Nnaji’s voluntary resignation, which many citizens hailed as an act of integrity.

On social media platform X (formerly Twitter), user @Chiads wrote:

 “Nnaji has set a moral precedent; public office is not a fortress. After his Florida mansions, Wike should go too. #WikeMustGo.”

Another user, @Amaka, echoed the sentiment:

 “Uche Nnaji’s resignation has proven that no office is bigger than public integrity. Wike should join him.”

Several others tied the campaign to Wike’s ongoing political rift in Rivers State, accusing him of attempting to control the affairs of the state and undermine Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

 “Wike’s actions during his feud with Fubara — how he bullied him and tried to act as a godfather — were undemocratic. He should have been sacked long ago,” another user, @Oyasto, posted.

Nnaji, who resigned earlier this week, said his decision followed “deep reflection and consultations with family, associates, and well-meaning Nigerians.” President Bola Tinubu has since accepted his resignation and wished him success in his future endeavours.

Meanwhile, many Nigerians insist that if the government could accept Nnaji’s resignation on moral grounds, Wike should not remain in office under the weight of multiple corruption allegations.

It will be recalled that in August 2024, Wike came under public criticism over alleged manipulation of land allocations in Abuja. He dismissed those accusations as “blackmail by political detractors.”
