The Senator representing Abia South Senatorial Zone, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Abaribe announced his defection on Wednesday at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu, where former Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, also formally joined the ADC.
The lawmaker disclosed that he tendered his resignation from APGA earlier in the day. He had joined the party in 2023 after leaving his former party to contest the Abia South senatorial seat.
“Let me also announce that this morning I resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance,” Abaribe said.
Declaring his full alignment with the ADC, the senator described Obi as his political leader and expressed optimism about the party’s future.
“So as of now, I am fully in ADC. Following my brother and our leader, Mr Peter Obi, I wish all of us well, and I know that we’re going to get there,” he said.
Reflecting on his long-held belief in collective action as a catalyst for change, Abaribe recalled a previous interview in which he predicted that transformation would come through unity.
“When I was given my last interview and asked how I thought it would happen, I said ‘Mboru’. Every woman knows what Mboru means. Now it’s Mboru,” he said.
Abaribe further stated that the ADC would serve as a platform for a broad-based political movement aimed at addressing Nigeria’s current challenges.
“When the time comes, all of us will go into ADC, and we shall remove the cancer that has held Nigeria down since 2015,” he said.
“We will remove that party that promised change but brought death and destruction to Nigeria,” the senator added.
Meanwhile, PUNCH Online had earlier reported that Peter Obi called on Nigerians, the Obidient Movement, and opposition leaders nationwide to unite under a broad national coalition to confront the country’s challenges.
“This decision is guided solely by patriotism and national interest. I now respectfully call on my political associates, the Obidient Movement, and opposition leaders across the country to join this broad national coalition under the African Democratic Congress,” Obi said.
He warned that inaction at a critical moment would have grave consequences, adding: “History will not forgive silence in moments of national peril.”
