Christmas Bonus: Rivers Government Clarifies Issues - The Alternative News

The Rivers State Government has clarified that the ₦100,000 Christmas bonus paid by the state was disbursed to all civil and public office holders without discrimination.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Communications, Honour Sirawoo, made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday, explaining that the bonus was paid across board to workers and pensioners captured on the Rivers State Government payroll system.

Sirawoo’s clarification followed a recent commendation by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over the payment of the Christmas bonus.

While he declined to comment on reports that members of the Rivers State House of Assembly rejected the payment, Sirawoo noted that the ₦100,000 Christmas bonus has been consistently paid for the past three years to civil servants, public officers, and pensioners.

He explained that the annual bonus is a token of appreciation for the dedication and service of workers throughout the year.

“Governor Siminalayi Fubara remains committed to implementing proactive measures that provide a social safety net for state employees and their families,” Sirawoo said.

He added that the Rivers State Government regards the NLC not merely as a labour union, but as a key partner in the implementation of the administration’s “Rivers First” development agenda.

According to him, the union’s public acknowledgement of the bonus reflects the cordial relationship between the government and the workforce, noting that workers remain the greatest pride of the state.

“While this bonus is meant to brighten the festive season, our long-term focus remains the continuous improvement of the working environment and the welfare of everyone serving Rivers State,” he said.

Meanwhile, PUNCH Online had reported that the Rivers State House of Assembly announced on Tuesday that it had returned the ₦100,000 credited to the personal bank accounts of its members, describing the payment as unsolicited and unapproved.

In a statement signed by the Assembly spokesperson, Enemi George, the lawmakers said the funds were credited on December 30, 2025, following directives from the governor without legislative approval.

The House added that members immediately returned the money to the Rivers State Government’s account upon discovering the transfers.
