Jigawa: Wife Arrested for Allegedly Poisoning Husband | The Alternative News

A newlywed woman has been arrested by the Jigawa State Police Command over the alleged poisoning of her husband, who reportedly died after consuming a meal prepared by her.

The incident occurred on January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m., in Gauza Village, Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

Confirming the development in a statement issued to journalists in Dutse, the state capital, on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Shi’isu Adam, said the deceased took his lunch at home before suddenly falling critically ill.

According to the police, the man was rushed to a hospital for urgent medical attention but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment.

Following the incident, detectives from the Jahun Police Division launched an investigation and arrested the wife of the deceased as the principal suspect.

SP Adam disclosed that during interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison. She reportedly stated that she sent her cousin to purchase the poison used in committing the act.

The suspect further claimed that she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she alleged contributed to her actions.

However, the police spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State, has ordered a thorough investigation of the case at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Dutse.

He added that upon the conclusion of the investigation, the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution.

Meanwhile, the police command urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, advising them to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving family and marital disputes.

The command warned against taking the law into one’s hands, noting that such actions often result in irreversible consequences, and reassured the public of its commitment to justice and the protection of lives and property across the state.

“The suspect is currently in police custody, and justice will be served,” the PPRO assured.
