2027: I’m Not Going to Be Commissioner — Iyabo Obasanjo Declares Ogun Governorship Ambition | The Alternative News

Daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, has declared her intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

She made the declaration during a radio interview on Eagle7 Sports 103.7FM, Abeokuta, on Saturday, while speaking with Nigerian football legend, Segun Odegbami.

Prof. Obasanjo said her return to active politics is solely to pursue the governorship seat, stressing that she is not interested in any other political appointment or elective office.

“So moving ahead, I’m not going to be commissioner. Like I said, I’m not even going back to the same party because I think that’s old and I don’t see the use of it. And I’m not going to go back to the Senate,” she said.

She added that her ambition is firmly focused on leading Ogun State.
“Like the Americans would say, there’s no need. And this is what I told my associates when this all started. I said the only thing I’ll come back to do is the governorship.”

According to her, preparations for the governorship race are already underway and will be pursued with seriousness and commitment.

“And we have started that journey. We are going to see it through. And so that’s the journey I’m on, and we are very serious about it. We are very dedicated to it,” she stated.

Prof. Obasanjo also confirmed that she recently joined the APC following sustained pressure from political supporters and associates who encouraged her to return to public service.

She revealed that a group of loyal supporters had been mobilising independently for about two years before formally approaching her to contest.

“A group of people who I did not bring together have been working, I think, for two years now. They started talking to me about a year ago, saying, ‘We think you are the best candidate. We want you back,’” she explained.

Prof. Obasanjo previously served as a senator and held several positions in the Ogun State Government before stepping away from frontline politics.

Recall that Politics Nigeria had earlier reported that she officially joined the APC, marking her formal return to partisan politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
