BREAKING: Tinubu Removes IGP Kayode Egbetokun, Appoints Tunji Disu as Successor

President Bola Tinubu has removed Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun from office, SaharaReporters reports.

Sources confirmed that Egbetokun has been directed to hand over to Tunji Disu, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos.

Senior police officials and sources within the Police Service Commission disclosed that the outgoing IGP was informed of the decision during a visit to the Presidential Villa and asked to prepare his handover notes.

Although no official statement has yet been issued by the Presidency, sources indicated that the decision followed mounting controversies surrounding Egbetokun’s tenure.

His continued stay in office had drawn criticism after his tenure was extended beyond the mandatory retirement age of 60 years or 35 years of service, prompting debates among civil society groups and legal analysts over compliance with police service regulations.

During his time as IGP, Egbetokun was also involved in legal disputes with activist Omoyele Sowore and media platform SaharaReporters over reports and public comments concerning his tenure and alleged misconduct. Court injunctions were issued restraining further publications on certain matters.

Allegations published by SaharaReporters had also linked individuals associated with the former IGP to controversial promotions and financial transactions. However, these claims remain subject to legal and institutional processes.

Tunji Disu, who is expected to assume leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, previously served in various command and investigative roles within the force.

An official announcement from the Presidency or the Nigeria Police Force is expected.
