Senators and members of the House of Representatives will reconvene in plenary on Tuesday, February 17, at the National Assembly (NASS).

An announcement by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, stated that the resumption is to enable lawmakers take crucial decisions on national matters.

“Consequently, all Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members are kindly requested to take note and reschedule their engagements accordingly to enable them to attend the session, as very crucial decisions shall be taken by each chamber during the session,” the Clerk said in the notice issued on Sunday.

The lawmakers had earlier suspended plenary to allow more time for the consideration and defence of the 2026 budget proposals by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Sources close to the legislators indicated that the reconvening may not be unconnected with the 2027 election timetable recently released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Parts of the timetable are said to overlap with the Ramadan period in 2027, particularly around February 7 and 8, when the fasting season is expected to begin.

Following the release of the timetable, several Nigerians, including senators, reportedly expressed concerns over the potential clash with Ramadan.

Findings suggest that Tuesday’s plenary may address the matter, with lawmakers expected to consider possible amendments or adjustments to the electoral timetable to prevent a conflict with scheduled Ramadan activities.
