A female officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has died after being struck by an operational vehicle during a simulation exercise in Abuja.
NSCDC spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale, confirmed the incident to TheCable on Saturday via telephone.
The name of the deceased officer had not been officially released as of the time of filing this report.
Footage circulating on social media showed the moment the accident occurred during what appeared to be a coordinated show-of-force drill. In the video, the officer was knocked down and run over by a patrol vehicle while it was making a turn during the exercise.
The vehicle eventually came to a halt as colleagues and onlookers rushed to lift it and pull her out. Emergency responders later arrived at the scene and evacuated her.
Confirming the fatality, Babawale said the corps had commenced internal processes following the incident.
“It is true we lost a personnel during the simulation exercise. Our senior officers are on their way to the residence of the deceased to pay our condolences,” he said.
He added that a detailed statement would be issued to clarify the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and outline steps being taken by the agency.
