Police confirm accident survivor lynched over alleged possession of AK-47 rifles | The Alternative News

Police in Niger State have confirmed that an unidentified accident survivor was lynched by a mob after three AK-47 rifles were allegedly discovered in his possession at Gawu Babangida in Gurara Local Government Area.

According to the Niger State Police Command, the incident followed a motorcycle crash involving two persons at the Boyi Sariki toll gate on Thursday.

Eyewitnesses said the motorcycle reportedly rammed into a road construction diversion barrier, leaving one of the riders dead on the spot. While residents attempted to rescue the second victim, a sack carried by the riders was searched, leading to the discovery of three AK-47 rifles.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, said a report from the Gawu-Babangida Division indicated that a police patrol team was on stop-and-search duty along the Boyi-Sarki toll gate area when it received a distress call about the lone accident involving two unidentified persons travelling from Tafa in Kaduna State towards the Abuja axis.

He stated that upon arrival at the scene, operatives recovered a sack from the victims containing three AK-47 rifles, six magazines and 104 rounds of ammunition.

Abiodun added that while one victim died at the scene, the second was lynched by a mob during efforts to move him to the hospital. The bodies have been deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Suleja.

The Commissioner of Police, Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, condemned the mob action, describing jungle justice as unacceptable. He noted that the suspect could have provided useful information to help the police trace the source of the weapons.

The police spokesperson said the Area Commander in Suleja has been directed to commence a full investigation and ensure the arrest of those involved, while the recovered rifles are undergoing ballistic analysis.
