Former Vice President and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has strongly condemned the recent attack on Gari Ya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, describing it as a “barbaric assault” and a reflection of Nigeria’s deepening security crisis.
In a statement shared via his official X handle on Monday, Atiku reacted to the Palm Sunday night attack, which reportedly left several residents dead and many others injured.
Expressing outrage over the incident, the former Vice President said the persistent wave of violence across the country signals what he termed a near-total collapse of governance and security architecture.
“I am outraged by the barbaric attack in Gari Ya Waye community, Angwan Rukuba, Jos, which claimed the lives of scores of innocent Nigerians and left many others injured. That this heinous assault occurred on Sunday night, March 29, 2026, is yet another damning indictment of the near-total collapse of security in our country,” he stated.
Atiku warned that the situation goes beyond isolated security lapses, describing it as a dangerous drift into lawlessness where human lives are increasingly devalued.
“What we are witnessing is not merely a security lapse, but a tragic descent into lawlessness where human lives are treated as expendable. Despite endless pronouncements and so-called marching orders, insecurity remains the grim daily reality for ordinary Nigerians who continue to bear the brunt of a failing system,” he added.
He further called for urgent and decisive political action to address the crisis, stressing that continued killings must not be normalized.
“The anger across the land must now compel urgent, decisive political will to confront and crush this menace. The continued slaughter of innocent citizens cannot become our new normal,” Atiku said, while extending his condolences to the families of the victims.
